About Dr. Abdullah Abdullah

H.E. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah
His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is a key political figure in Afghanistan. He was a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, a candidate in the 2009 Afghan Presidential election and current Democratic Opposition Leader of Afghanistan as Chairman of political party “Coalition for Hope and Change”.
From the early days of resistance to the liberation of Kabul in 1992, Dr. Abdullah’s relentless efforts and devotion to the cause of independence for the Afghan people earned him national recognition. In 1992, after the Afghan resistance regained control of Kabul, Dr. Abdullah served as spokesperson for the Defense Ministry of the Islamic State of Afghanistan. In 1996, Dr. Abdullah served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Afghan government -in exile, which was officially recognized by the United Nations and members of the international community. In 1998, Dr. Abdullah became Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister.

On December 22, 2001, during the historic Intra-Afghan talks in Bonn, Germany, Dr. Abdullah was selected as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan. Late in June of 2002, Dr. Abdullah was again confirmed as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan in the Loya Jirga (grand council which chose Afghanistan’s new transitional government.)
Dr. Abdullah subsequently served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. In his capacity, as Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, he eloquently and successfully advocated Afghanistan’s foreign policy at the international level and played a vital role in the consolidation of Afghanistan’s foreign relations with the broader international community. In 2006, after leaving his post as Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullah served as Secretary General of the Massoud Foundation.
With an aim of bringing change and hope to the Afghan people, Dr. Abdullah registered as a candidate for Afghanistan’s 2009 Presidential elections. He ran a highly impressive and dynamic Presidential campaign under the slogan of “Change” with national agendas – to institute needed reform and to change Afghanistan’s system of governance from a Presidential to a Parliamentary system.

Unofficial and non-certified electoral results of Afghanistan 2009 Presidential elections were announced on September 16, 2009, showing that Dr. Abdullah was in second position of the total votes cast. According to Afghanistan’s constitution, a candidate must receive over 50% to win or a run-off election is triggered. A second round runoff election was called between the Incumbent President Hamid Karzai and Dr. Abdullah after the Electoral Complaints Commission concluded a vigorous investigative process and disallowed a large number of questionable ballots, with the majority of those votes being in favor of the Incumbent Hamid Karzai. On November 1, 2009, Dr. Abdullah announced that he would not participate in the second round of the Presidential elections.
Dr. Abdullah has earned the respect and admiration of world leaders, and his own people, as a voice of moderation and consensus. He is consistently working for peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan, as well as advocating the reform of government institutions. Dr. Abdullah believes that there can be no greater priority than regaining the trust of the Afghan people, who have waited too long for a responsible government, one that puts their needs first. Dr. Abdullah is involved in the political process and is working with other political figures to institute constructive reform and positive change in Afghanistan’s political system.

Dr. Abdullah is married and has three daughters and one son. He is fluent in Dari, Pashto and English, and is proficient in Arabic and French.
